Some Sobering Statistics
OK, this is not a pun about the Sober virus.
This is about some very sobering statistics about the extent of spyware infection on computers, as determined in studies by Webroot Software, the makers of Spy Sweeper. The report, called the State of Spyware Report, is available HERE.
Here is brief recap of what Webroot has found through its Spy Audit service:
88% of consumer computers checked had spyware installed, with an average of 7.2 instances per machine (not counting cookies).
87% of corporate computers checked had spyware installed, with an average of 3.8 instances per machine (not counting cookies).
All it takes is one instance of spyware to totally compromise the security of a computer or a computer network. Clearly this is an extremely serious situation.
The vast majority of the owners of these infected system had no idea that their systems were seriously compromised.
The spyware and adware industry is making an estimated two billion dollars per year by compromising the computers of Internet users, usually without their knowledge of consent.
Humm.
