Wireless Security Myths

There are a lot of myths about wireless security that if implemented, can leave you with a very false sense of security.

Wireless Security Myths:

  • MAC filtering
  • SSID hiding
  • LEAP authentication
  • Disable DHCP
  • Antenna placement

Why are they myths? Because these methods cam be broken in seconds with a very rudimentary level of skill.

  • WEP

And WEP is only marginally better. It may take a few minutes to crack.

For the consumer level of security, for a home of small office, we recommend WPA security be implemented. It provided a minimum safe level of security for a wireless network. To implement this level of wireless security, the wireless devices and the operating system need to support it. Windows XP SP2 supports WPA. Check your device documentation and manufacturers web site to see if your devices support WPA.
