Hurricanes Flood Internet with Scams

In the wake of the devastating Katrina hurricane disaster, and Rita, the sequel. Scams are flooding the Internet. We advise all computer and email users to be very careful if they receive unsolicited emails relating to these hurricanes, and to be careful to visit well known Internet sites.

Some of these emails are using the Katrina disaster to attempt to steal you identity and your credit card information. The FBI provides information about many of these scams at the following page on their web site http://www.fbi.gov/page2/sept05/katrinarelief091405.htm

We do not want to dissuade people from donating to the many good causes that can be found online. The Internet has become a very efficient way for good charities to accept donations. Just be prudent and careful. Rather than following the links in unsolicited emails, simply enter the web addresses to your favorite charity manually by typing it in the address bar or consult a trusted source of legitimate charities.

Your local newpaper or television station may have lists of legitimate charities. One such list, provided by the The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, can be found here: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/hurricanehelp.html
